Letter from Glasgow: Metaphysical Painting
There are Italian pines planted along the stone embankment that curves from this Scottish harbour towards the island, in spite of the inclement conditions of the north easterly climate. Later, I learned that this place had been used as a quarantine island. In the fifteenth century, people suffering from syphilis were shipped to the island and left there to die. A hundred years later it received the crews of ships infected with the plague. Less a quarantine point than a final destination. A ship load of Russian sailors was buried there. There are no graveyards. It is now uninhabited.
